What does being a natural light photographer mean?
As in any job we photographers tend to throw around photography words and not really realize that people might not know what we mean. There are more and more natural light photographers now and we like to make sure you realize we are. So what does that even mean? Well, you probably guessed part of it. We use natural light in our photography.
But what does that mean? That means we try very hard to never use or we actually never use a flash of any kind. We always try to use sunlight for our images. Heck, I even use the moonlight if I can. But my love of the moon will have to be a completely different post.
Where do we find it?
As a natural light photographer, we tend to love big windows if we are stuck inside. we will open the blinds and try to let as much in as possible. You just can’t beat the beauty of the light the sun lends to us. So if we are in your home or in a wedding venue we will be drawn to the rooms with the best windows and we will pull you towards them.
If we are outside we will use the sun to put the best soft lighting on your face or to shine in behind you and make your hair glow. The sunlight can add depth to a photograph by putting different light on the trees behind you or by streaming in a window or porch. I honestly feel like you can’t beat it.
Now as a wedding photographer you can get away with using natural light for a lot of things. Especially if it’s an outdoor wedding on a beautiful day. But for weddings, we can’t always choose the weather or the location. So in those cases, we try our best to get a flash of some sort to mimic the sun.
As a natural light photographer, I will tell you, if you want to take a picture in a dark space try your best to have a large window behind you. If you learn to do that, you have a good chance of some beautiful light.
