What do we wear??

What to wear?

I get the questions about what to wear a lot, especially around Mini Session time. I have tried to describe this in many ways and in the end showing you past pictures of families and what they have worn is probably the best way to answer the question. Years ago whenever people got their picture made they called everyone involved and everyone wore matching things. The same color pant and same color top and things like that. And while that is still done and looks great, there is now another option.

I love lots of different colors. I’ve found that layers tend to help the most in family portraits. It’s why I love to do them in the spring and fall. You could just wear different shades of the same color. Or you could pick three colors that look pretty together and some people wear one and others wear the others and then throw in a necklace, scarf, or cardigan with the color that isn’t on your clothes already. Try to coordinate your clothing, not wear identical clothing.

Where do we start

When trying to decide what to wear start with one outfit. Typically the person that is the hardest to shop for or who has the biggest issue with how they look in certain things. And build everyone else’s outfits from there. If you have little ones, make sure the clothes you pick fit. Don’t put them in an outfit that you bought for them to grow into.

I do recommend staying away from t-shirts with things and words on them unless you are going for a theme of some sort that it lends itself to. No crazy bold, bright prints that will make you stand out above everyone else. Wear what you are comfortable in. If you feel uncomfortable, you won’t look comfortable. Be careful with dresses that are too short if you want any pictures sitting down. Try to avoid fluorescent colors. They can make your skin look odd colors.

If your family is relaxed and doesn’t dress up often, don’t feel like you have to wear formal clothing. But if you and your fiance love to go out on the town and get dressed up, you might consider one outfit that is more dressy.

When there are things about your body you hate, cover them. If you hate your arms, don’t wear a sleeveless shirt. If you love your legs, wear shorts or a skirt. And if the timing works out it can always be fun for mom or any of the girls to get their hair and makeup done the day of your portrait so she’s feeling extra gorgeous.

Pictures with newborns and tiny babies

Things are a little different if you are doing pictures with a newborn or very tiny baby. Too much clothing or things that stick out and are bulky with overshadow your baby. You don’t want to worry about a scarf or layered shirts sticking up in their face.
