Mia’s Smash Cake | Oakland TN

Mia’s Session

Mia’s smash cake session was scheduled at her home in Oakland TN on a hot humid southern day. Until recently I never remember needing to let my camera adjust to the outside humidity anywhere other than in Florida. When I arrived at their home Mia’s big brother was ready and waiting to play. He brought me a special “drink” he had made in his tiny kitchen.

We wanted to take some of the pictures outside their home and as soon as we walked out my lenses fogged up. After giving it a minute to adjust we started our session getting some images of the many faces of William. He was in a funny and animated mood. So we played for a bit waiting for sister to wake from her nap.

Mia

Once sweet Mia was awake her personality shined through. She would wrinkle up her face and stare at my camera unsure of what I was up to behind it. But as soon as she saw or heard her daddy her little face lit up. Her mom brought out her phone and started playing some familiar music and Mia started dancing. When the song her big brother calls “her song” came on she started patting her chest to show that this was her song.

There was lots of singing, dancing, and general chaos as we went through getting family pictures. Then big brother was swept away with his grandmother to go swimming while Mia had a clothing change. Then it was time for Mia’s smash cake. We tried a few of her dressed in her tutu before the cake came out but she was not having it. When the cake was sat in front of her she was really unsure about it.

We gave Mia some milk and a snack to get her settled and then she slowly started sampling her cake. She didn’t dive into it the way her mom was thinking she would. But once she got a good taste she kept reaching in for more. And the best part of a smash cake session at home is getting to go straight to the bath!
